From the Elkhart Truth

Roscoe crowned Miss Elkhart County

ELKHART -- When the lights finally came down on the 2008 Miss Elkhart County Scholarship Pageant Saturday evening in the Central High School auditorium, a familiar head was wearing the crown.

For the second time in three years, Lindsey Roscoe took home the local title and, as Miss Elkhart County 2008, will represent the county in the June state pageant in Kendallville.

But she won't be alone.

For the second year, the "Miss" pageant was blended with another, to select the Outstanding Teen 2008. Jean Medin, 16, Central High School junior, was named winner and will travel to the state event, which is the same time and place.

Jean can take some tips from Lindsey, 20, who was the local winner in 2006, and floated through the 3 1/2-hour program with all the poise of a returning champ.

In addition to the $3,000 cash scholarship, she received in-kind (if she chooses to attend) scholarship tuition awards from Bethel and Goshen Colleges of $20,000 and $16,000, respectively, plus an $800 fashion award and a variety of gift certificates for everything from gowns to fitness to beauty consultations. And, of course, the crown, pin and official trophy.

In addition to the top spot, Lindsey earned $300 for the Miss Congeniality Award (voted by her fellow contestants), $500 as the Community Service winner and another $500 as one of two interview winners.

The other was Jackie Jerlecki, 18, of Goshen who was named second runner-up and received the attached $700 scholarship plus $4,000 in-kind scholarships from Goshen and Bethel.

For anyone who might think a second shot at the state title was less of a pressure position than a first-time try, Lindsey disagreed. "There is more pressure," she said. "I'm holding myself to a higher standard."

To achieve this, Indiana University junior, who sang "Don't Rain on My Parade" from "Funny Girl" for her talent presentation, said she planned to focus on her interview and on-stage question which, together, count for 30 percent of the total score.

First runner-up was Katie Hrynewycz, 21, a Ball State University senior, who wowed the audience with her driving rendition of every fiddler's favorite, "Orange Blossom Special." Her cash scholarship was $1,500 and her in-kind scholarships, $4,000 each. Katie took the $500 Talent Award and the People's Choice Award, voted on by the audience at intermission.

Kelsey Morley, 18, was named third runner-up. She received a $350 scholarship and also won the Lifestyle and Fitness in Swimsuit for $150.

Kendra Ellington completed the top five as fourth runner-up, winning a $350 scholarship.

Nonfinalist winners of $100 awards were Sheila Abbott, interview, and April Miller, talent.

Laken Thacker, 13, of Goshen was first runner-up in the Outstanding Teen Pageant, receiving $150. The People's Choice Award went to Chelsea Tessier.

Throughout the evening there were talent presentations by the outgoing Miss Elkhart County McKayela Collins and Audrey Putnam, the 2007 Outstanding Teen.

Sixteen girls ages 4 to 12 were introduced and crowned as princesses.

Tracey Crawford served as mistress of ceremonies for the annual event, sponsored by Elkhart Elks Lodge #425.
