ELKHART, Ind. — Lindsey Roscoe, a 20-year-old junior at Indiana
University and daughter of John and Jan Roscoe, Elkhart, was crowned the
2008 Miss Elkhart County Saturday at Elkhart Central High School.
Roscoe was one of 11 participants in the 37th annual scholarship pageant
in the Miss American system. She will compete in the Miss Indiana
pageant in June. She also received the Richard Love Miss Congeniality
award and the George Stutzman community service award prior to being
crowned Miss Elkhart County.
Roscoe performed “Don’t Rain on My Parade” as her talent and responded
to the question about the importance of educating the community about
meningitis prevention. She explained that there is a vaccination that
will prevent four of the five types of meningitis. Roscoe is a junior at
IU studying dental hygiene.
First runner-up Katie Hrynewycz was picked for the “people’s choice”
award and received the pageant talent award, sponsored by Blessing
Music. For her talent, she performed the “Orange Blossom Special” on her
fiddle. She has played the violin for 17 years. She is a senior at Ball
State University majoring in exercise science.
Second runner-up was Jackie Jerlecki, a freshman at Bowling Green State
University. She is the 2001 Goshen Junior Miss. She performed “Some
Things Are Meant to Be” as her talent.
Jerlecki responded to the question of “How may people benefit from the
arts?” She said that there is so much people can learn, and it can teach
discipline and help improve test scores.
Kelsey Morley, Elkhart, a graduate of Concord High School and now a
freshman at Michigan State University, was third runner-up. She also
earned the pageant fitness/swimsuit award.
The pageant interview award was a tie between Roscoe and Jerlecki and
each will receive a plaque.
Kendra Ellington, Goshen, is a senior at Ball State University majoring
in vocal music education.
She performed “Gimmie, Gimmie” from the musical “Thoroughly Modern
Millie.”
At the same time as the Miss Elkhart County pageant, the second annual
Outstanding Teen contest was held among four young teen entries.
Jean Medin, 16, a junior at Elkhart Central High School, was crowned
Outstanding Teen, and Laken Thacker, Goshen, an eighth-grader at
Heritage Middle School, was first runner-up. Chesea Tessier, 15,
